“Ahhh…. What a nice day,” you said as you stretched your arms out. You had just finished sweeping up the floors in the café that you were working at. You were looking around to see if you missed any spots when you heard the door jingle. “Hello, welcome to--” you stopped and blinked. Was that…?
“(y/n)?” your customer froze as well and stared right back, his mouth beginning to smile.
“You… you work here?”
You ran over and glomped him. “Gilly!!” you laughed.
He laughed as well as he hugged you back and said, “Ach, you’re hugging me so tight, I can’t breathe…”
You “pouted” and pulled back so you could look at him. “Well, who’s the person who had the nerve to go to a different school a million miles away?” you were joking, but you couldn’t help but feel a little bit hurt from remembering.
“Frau…” he said, hurt reflecting in his eyes.
“Hey, my shift’s done, so why don’t you come over and we can hang out, for old time’s sake?” you quickly changed the subject.
“That sounds like an awesome idea, something that only someone who’s been around me could come up with!” he joked. You nudged him in the ribs and then went in back to grab your things.
“..and this is my humble abode,” you said as you dumped your purse onto the shoe holder.
You took off your shoes and put on some slippers. “Hey, you can have some too, it’s just so I don’t have to clean the floors later…” you explained as you gave him some big slippers that normally your dad wore. You led him to the kitchen, motioned him to sit down, and went to the fridge to get some snacks out.
After a long drawn out silence, your friend finally spoke up. “..So, three years, huh?”
You stopped rummaging through your fridge to look at him. “Yup. Amazing, right?” you went back to looking into the bottom drawer.
“Yeah… it seems just like yesterday we were taking classes together, annoying the heck out of Arthur-“
You started laughing as you set some fruit on the table. “Oh, what a funny guy… he was always so serious!”
“- and my brother as well,” he smiled wickedly.
“Ah, Ludwig! How is he?” you asked, curiously as you began to cut an apple.
“Ach, he’s fine of course... still the same ‘ol straight arrow.”
You smiled and began to giggle. “Gill, remember that time we turned off his alarm?”
He began to laugh as well. “Yeah, and then he slept through half the day, he was so angry at us!”
You both smiled at each other fondly. You then began to remember just what you felt about him- to your dismay. Sure you two were the inseparable “awesome” duo, but that didn’t mean you didn’t have any feelings for him… you had been trying to forget him after he went overseas for college, but now that he was here… you cursed under your breath and then turned a bit to the side, praying that he wouldn’t notice the fact that your face was beginning to redden.
“So, has my awesome frau had any ‘action’?” he said, with a big grin. He leaned forward and tried to get you to look at him.
“’Action?” you said questioningly at first, but when you saw his look, you began to really blush. “Gilbert! Oh, shut up! Of course not!”
“Keseseseseeseese~” he began to laugh. “Your face, frau, is priceless!”
You pouted and then gave him half of an apple. “So... how about you, did you have any girlfriends?” you asked cautiously.
“What?” he feigned ignorance.
“Oh don’t you do that!” you said as you “punched” him.
He then got up. “Okay, I want to see the rest of your apartment… “
You sighed and got up and walked with him to the other side of your kitchen. “Okay, well then, here’s my room-“you were cut off when he suddenly went in. “Hey..!”
He looked around and smiled. “It looks like just like the room at your parent’s house.. You’re still the same ‘ol (y/n)” he smiled.
“And what’s wrong with that?” you smiled back. He then started walking to your bookshelf.
You walked over to him and looked at him curiously. He was suddenly very quiet. He reached up and grabbed your yearbook. “Ah, do you want to look at old pictures together?” you smiled.
But then to your surprise, he gave you a strange look. “You mean you never saw-“
“Saw what?” you asked, curiously.
He looked at you once more and then opened the book and flipped it over. To your surprise, a sheet of paper flew out. “What is that--?”
He looked at you and blushed. “You mean you didn’t see this?” he said, clearly embarrassed as he picked it up.
“No, I didn’t... Let me see it,” you said as you reached out for it. To your surprise, he jerked it up, far out of your reach. “Gilly, why are you suddenly being like this?” you began to jump up and try to grab it.
“This is so not awesome...” he looked up at the ceiling. You could see that his cheeks were tinted red. “I was hoping that you’d read this once I… left…”
“What? This is something you wrote to me??” you said. Now you were really curious. You grabbed his arms and did all you could to get it.
“Frau... nein! Nein!” he protested, as he continued to move it out of your reach.
You were suddenly very impatient and decided that the only way you could see this paper is if you jumped. So you did. You jumped onto him and Gilbert suddenly fell because he was not expecting you to.
“Ooff..” you two landed-luckily- right on top of your bed. You finally grabbed the paper from him and smiled triumphantly.
“Why are you so jealous, Gilly? Did you write a love letter to me or something?” you said, totally joking. You unfolded it and began to read it. (While totally sitting on top of your friend so he couldn’t escape, of course.)
Hallo, Frauline. This is my… what I’m writing for your yearbook. I know you’re pretty upset with me for going to a school that’s out of country- and millions of miles away, as you put it- but I promise that I will be back as soon as I finish. I know, you are probably rolling your eyes right now, frau, since you know that I am too awesome for school, but I promise that I will work my sexy butt off so I can finish early. I’m sure that you will be fine here… you have always been an awesome frauline, and you better know that, since Gilbert only has awesome friends , and I’m sure that you’ll have tons of guys asking you to be your boyfriend… but… (several words scribbled out here)
Okay, I’m going to say it. Ich liebe dich, frauline. I love you. I know this will be a lot to ask you, and you can call me un-awesome as many times as you want, and I wouldn’t blame you if you just forgot about me and got a guy anyways…. But could I ask you to wait for me?
-Your awesome and loving friend, Gilbert.
Your face turned red, and you looked at your friend with a surprised expression. “Gilly… you wrote this?”
“Ja…” he blushed, and tried to look away.
“This was when I was so angry at you that I couldn’t even let you sign my yearbook...” you said quietly.
He managed to sit up and he put his arms around your shoulders. “Frauline…”
“Wow. This is so ironic. I wouldn’t even look at this book since I felt so guilty after you left… I was really stupid...” you began to tear up.
“It’s- it’s alright.” He said as he hugged you, pulling you close to his face. He wiped tears off of your cheeks, just like he’d do so often when you two were younger.
“You know- I love you too…” you said quietly.
“You do?” he said, clearly surprised.
That made you smile, albeit a sad smile, but you looked up to him and said, “Gilly, for being such a “vomanizer” you really can’t read my feelings, can you?”
He smiled and hugged you even tighter. “Mein gott, I can’t believe that you love me back… never in my wildest dreams…”
You smiled and blushed as well, holding the letter close to your heart.
“Me too, Gilbert… me too.”
