You got onto the bus, paid the fare, and slowly walked to a seat and scooted over so you were sitting in a window seat. You looked outside at the street, but you couldn’t see anything but the reflection of your face. It was evening now, and the sky outside was pitch black. You set down your bag onto the seat next to you and put your headphones back on.

You leaned your head on the window, as you closed your eyes and savored every word he sang. You could feel the love in his voice, and even though he just sang to not worry, you couldn’t help but feel lonely. Your eyes began to get misty as you felt your heart ache. You missed him so much, and your heart felt every mile apart he was from you.

Your fingers unconsciously enclosed around the ring that was on your finger. It wasn’t a wedding ring- but an engagement ring. You remember crying when you heard that he had to leave you. But you promised to wait for him. And wait you did.

You were alone in your sorrow, because your parents did not approve of your engagement with him, and he had none to speak of. So you ran off to another city with him, leaving everything behind for him. But soon the war called him away…

But no, you never regretted your decision. You’d do the same thing a hundred times over for him, and never change your mind. Never before had you been in so much love, and you’d stay loyal to him to the very end.

You saw as you walked up to your street, that the tiny little house you and him bought had its porch light on. Your heart froze as fear coarsed through your veins. Was there a theif..? you don’t remember leaving the lights on! You began to run, as fast as you can, with hopelessness weighing heavily on your heart. If your house was ransacked then…

You stopped. You heard a familiar tune, and your mind went completely blank. That song!

Tears were now falling freely from your face as you now stumbled up the stairs to your front door and slowly opened the door.

You were greeted by a familiar, and sorely missed, face.

“….Gilbert!” you sobbed.

He smiled and set aside his guitar as he got his crutches and stood up. You cried some more as you ran over to him and hugged him tenderly and kissed his face, sobbing all the while. He then grinned and had you sit down next to him. He grabbed your face gently in between his strong hands, and wiped the tears from your face, and you both examined each other’s faces, re-memorizing every detail. You stared lovingly into his ruby red eyes and ran your hand through his silver hair… as if you couldn’t believe he was really there. You gently traced a scar that ran down his cheek.

He smiled and softly replied to your questioning look. “A bullet.”

You smiled back at him sadly and then kissed that scar. “I’m glad it didn’t do much worse than that.”

“..Do you think I’m not handsome anymore, mein frau? I have a permanent limp now and scars…”

You laughed for the first time in a long time, although it was tinged with a bit of sadness. “No, Gilly, I think you looke even more handsome because of it. It shows just how brave you were.”

He smiled and your heart jumped just like it did when you two first met. He then kissed you tenderly and whispered, “I’m permanently discharged from the army, with full honors!” he said proudly, as he showed you his medals.

You almost fell over at that statement. “So… you’re staying here… forever?”

He then looked at you tenderly and gently cupped your chin in his hand and said, “..So we’ll never be separated again. And we can finally be married.” He finished that unspoken thought in your mind.

You cried and hugged him tightly. He chuckled and embraced you, holding you tightly in his strong arms and buried his face in your hair. And as you felt his warm breath warm up your head, you heard the somewhat bittersweet final verse of that song that you held so dear…

You'll know it's all because of you
We can do whatever we want to

…although it was only filled with love and sweetness now, for you two were never to be separated again. <3
