Today had been a pretty sucky day. You were late to school today, you forgot your homework when your math teacher finally decided to collect it, and you forgot your lunch that day. Overall, you pretty much wished that you crawled back into bed and stayed there instead of listening to your alarm clock… but then again, if you stayed home, you wouldn't have been able to see….. Him.
You were thinking of this when you were walking over to your locker late after school, pondering about that last train of thought you had. "Wait… I've only really wanted to go to school because of him?" I could feel my cheeks burn when I realized that it was sadly true. *How low have I gone if the only thing that brings me to school is a guy?!?* You groan to yourself. You reached your locker, and banged your head against it and just leaned against it for a bit while trying to sort out your thoughts.
This guy was not just any guy… he was Kiku Honda, the new transfer student who had just recently started coming to your school. Kiku was gorgeous, refined, intelligent, excruciatingly polite, and extremely quiet and shy. While most of your friends found his reserved demeanor a bit standoffish, and well, to put it very bluntly, kind of creepy, you found it to be extremely compelling. You really felt this desire to get to know him and become someone who he can slowly open up to. You wanted to be the only person who could make him smile. --and you knew he was just special. After all, he healed up your broken heart after that one guy who rejected you. He made you break your promise to never love a guy again.
You sighed as you slowly opened up your locker. There was also one little thing that was bothering you. In the deepest part of your heart you somehow thought that this love was going to be an unrequited love. You have indeed been friends ever since you first walked up to him and talked to him during lunch on the first day. You've studied together, texted each other for long nights, and even went out together to hang out. Everyone in your class was suspicious…they all thought that we'd be an "item" sooner or later. You have even gotten compliments from classmates telling you that you and Kiku would make the cutest couple. However, you can only smile and nod at that while your heart aches a bit because, once again, you are convinced that he only views you as a friend. *forever alone~* you thought to yourself as you slowly closed your locker and sighed. You looked at the floor and then closed your eyes and thought, *no, I cannot be depressed, I-must-be- happy!* I thought to myself. I put on a big fake smile and turned around… only to crash into… well who do you think you crashed into? --Kiku, duhh!
"!!!" Surprised you backed off unsteadily. "Sorry Kiku! I had no idea you were there!!" you apologized as you started to back up. You squeaked when you felt Kiku grab your elbow to steady you.
"I am very sorry too, _______-chan, I should have said something," he replied while looking straight into my eyes very seriously.
Direct eye contact! You tired as hard as you might but you could not keep it for more than three seconds before averting your eyes. You blushed and stared at the ground, "How long have you been standing there, Kiku?"
"For about ten minutes," he answered with a straight face.
"What the heck?! You've been staring at me for ten freakin minutes?!?" you exclaimed, turn in an even deeper shade of red. So he has been staring at you for that long and didn't do anything? What if he could read your thoughts?! Sometimes you were convinced those deep brown eyes of his could pierce through souls! My entire body was screaming at me to run away—in fact you were trying to pull yourself way from him—but his grip on your arm was tight and then….
He leaned forward and put his forehead on yours.
"Are you sick, _______-chan?" his brown eyes reflected concern.
Ohh… it clicked it your mind. Well you had been leaning my head against the locker(in pure disgust of myself) so you could understand why he thinks you are not feeling well… that and your freaking stupid blush. Paralyzed, you whispered, "No, Kiku, I'm fine… just feeling a little sick… right here." You laid your hand on your chest—in the general area where your now rapidly beating heart was.
At that, he then backed away and looked at you, slowly letting go of your arm. Spellbound, you shyly looked back at him. Once again you mentally face palmed. Why the heck did you tell him something like that! However, this time there was a curious mixture of emotion in his eyes… compassion… and hint… of -is that what it is?- Jealousy?
"_________-chan, tell me what is wrong," he asked as he motioned for us to start walking towards the exit in the hall.
"……" your mind was practically a storm of emotions. You walked silently next to him and he kindly gave you time to sort through you thoughts.
When we got to the outside of the hall, we both saw that it was raining. He started to take out an umbrella from his backpack and then proceeded to offer to hold it over our heads. Before he started walking out, you grabbed his arm shyly. He looked back at you, with a question in his eyes.
"Well, I- I- I have liked this guy for a long time, and we have been friends for, well, a good amount of time…. But I have no idea how he feels about me, and it hurts because I probably never will," You shyly told him.
He looked at me, "Well, I think you should just tell him how you feel. The worst thing that could happen is that he'll say no," he paused and then looked away. "Although I would highly doubt that would happen."
You released his arm and began to walk slowly into the rain. You felt your heart beat harder with each step because of the mere proximity between you two. Kiku was looking straight ahead. You sneaked a peek at him to stare at the delicate features of his profile- the pale, soft skin, the tender looking lips, and his soft brown eyes. Then finally what he said began breaking through to you. If you were going to tell him, this would be the last time that you would feel brave enough to tell him. Even though your heart thumped in fear and you began feeling all fidgety, you took the leap of faith. You stopped walking, so then Kiku turned and looked at you once again.
"____________-chan? What's wro--?"
You cut him off with a big embrace. Yes it was indeed very daring, because you very well knew Kiku's strict personal space barriers.
You then stepped back and then, with your face flaming, you told him, "Kiku, I love you!" and then, for some strange reason, you started running. You were running as far away from Kiku as you could, with the rain pelting your face and intermingling with your tears. As you ran, you felt a whole mix of just ugly emotions surface. Regret, shame, embarrassment… how would you ever be able to face him again?
Then suddenly, your body began to slow down and you sat down on the wet concrete with your wet clothes and your wet hair, enjoying the rain because it was cool and it also hid your tears. You tried to wipe your eyes with the sleeve of your jacket while breathing heavily… until you suddenly felt the rain stop falling and felt a familiar presence behind you.
"___________-chan! Why did you just take off like that?!" he dropped the umbrella and bent down and grasped your arms to pull you up. "Don't you know that when you confess you have to wait for the other person's answer?"
You looked quizzically at Kiku through your rain and tear filled eyes. "Your… A-answer?" you whispered.
Kiku blushed and looked at me. "I would have never thought that I was that boy you were just talking about," he paused and gave me a bashful smile. "I fact, if I knew I was that boy, I would have told you first how I felt, but you beat me to it."
You couldn't speak. Did this me that he… liked you?!
"Now, for my answer…" Kiku, somewhat breaking off from his uncharacteristic boldness he had just exhibited early, cupped your chin somewhat nervously and looked deeply into your (color) eyes. "May I?"
As thoughts were not registering into your brain at that moment, you somehow managed to numbly move your head up and down.
He then gently kissed your lips. Your eyes widened and then as you got used to it, you closed your eyes and actually began to enjoy it and you naturally began to kiss him back. You wrapped your arms around his shoulders and he began to gently put his hands on the back of your head and caress your (color & length) hair. The rain was still falling, but then, again, you both did not notice how drenched you were getting.
You finally broke from him and saw that his face was as red as yours.
"S-sorry… ___________" he mumbled, deeply embarrassed.
"What? No… I-I am very happy," you said as you shyly smiled and looked up at him. His eyes looked as soft and as warm as chocolate... full of love and his typically stoic demeanor was softened by a bright, but albeit, shy smile. This made you feel even more thrilled.
He then brushed the hair out of your eyes and blushed once more as he said softly to you, "Aishiteru."
You then embraced him once more and buried your face into his chest. He smelled so good!
He stiffened again, but then relaxed and put his strong arms around you. "Aishiteru…. Aishiteru…" you repeated over and over again to the man you truly loved. No more would you be alone, and no more would you fear that your love would not be accepted. For at least in this world there was one person who would love you unconditionally, and you were safe in his arms right now.
Kiku then gently patted your head. "Look, _________, we have been blessed. What a fortunate sign!" You looked up and slightly turned your head to see. It was a rainbow. The most beautiful one we have ever seen and one that we will never forget. Then Kiku slowly and somewhat regretfully pulled away from my embrace and picked up his umbrella. He put it away, for it had stopped raining, and held out his hand to you. "Let's go home and dry off before we both catch a cold, I'll give you something to drink before you head home too."
You smiled and took his hand and you both walked off, completely happy and glad that the person who occupied your thoughts finally knew your feelings.
Never hold back your feelings… you never know… that guy might just like you back!
The next day your friends looked at you suspiciously. You were wearing a mask and reeked of cold medicine.
"Hey ______________, why are you suddenly sick?" they asked you.
"Oh… I just got caught in that rain storm yesterday," you replied innocently.
"But, __________, that was right after school," your best friend remarked, as she arched one eyebrow.
"Oh! And I saw Kiku wearing one earlier as well," your other friend giggled.
"Oh, so did you two get caught up in the same rainstorm…. together?" they ganged up on you. They knew that you had a big crush on him.
"Uh- Uhm—uh…" you started to slowly walk backwards while thinking of a way to escape. You didn't want you two to become the latest gossip.
Suddenly, you bumped into someone who then put took your hand. "Ki- kiku!" you yelped with surprise. You didn't know he'd be this bold.
Kiku just smiled (as far as you could tell because he had a mask on) and looked at your friends. "________ and I are now a couple!" he beamed down at you. You felt very happy.
Your friends squealed and yelled congratulations to you. You smiled in acknowledgement as Kiku lead you away.
"I love you too, ______________."
