"Alfie!!! Alfieeee!!!" you yelled as you frantically waved your arms to get his attention. You got up on top of a planter at the park and jumping up and down. Today was the day that you guys had been planning to meet up, ever since he left to college.
"__________________!!!!" he yelled happily as he finally noticed you. He began to run towards you with a big grin.
When he came, you jumped off the planter and he caught you, spinning you around as he hugged you. You began to blush as you noticed that you began to enjoy his hug. He was so warm… and he smelled really good… and he wasn't letting you go!
You began hitting his chest with your small fists. "Let me go, you big bear!" you yelled at him affectionately.
"But I don't want to let you go! It's been such a long time since I last saw you!!" he complained with a big grin on his face, but he let go off me and set me on the ground.
"That doesn't mean you have to smother me!" I "complained" as well as I fixed my clothes and my hair.
But it was true that he hadn't seen me for a while. He was going to a college in another state while I was going to one nearby our hometown. Since Alfred and I were best friends, it was a little hard for us to be so far apart, but we managed to stay in touch. Alfie always came home during the breaks so we had plenty of time to hang out, like right now!
"Oh yeah! I brought this!" you scrambled back over to the planter and picked up a basketball. "Want to shoot some hoops?" you asked as you flashed a cute smile at him.
He smiled… and blushed a bit? "Sure, I'm up for it! But I'm gonna win!!!" he said as he immediately knocked the ball out of your hands.
"HEY! That's no fair!!"you pouted as he started to run towards the courts while dribbling the ball. Then you smiled. You secretly had a big crush on Alfie, but you were convinced that you were doomed forever to be in the dreaded "Friend zone." Alfie never seemed to like you or treat you any different than he did with any of his other friends...
"___________________! Come here you slow poke!" Alfred yelled from the courts, breaking through your thoughts.
You stuck your tongue out at him in protest and then smiled and began to run towards after him. Who cared if he didn't like you in that way? You guys were best friends, and that's all you really wanted.
You two played a few two on two games until you were both tied. You could kind of tell that Alfie was being a bit easy on you, so you thought you could spice it up a bit.
"Alfie, I have a proposition," you announced as you finished the last game.
"Oh yeah? What is it?" he smiled at you, with one eyebrow raised.
"Let's play this game for a wish. If I win, you'll have to grant me a wish- and if you win, I'll have to grant you a wish," you told him.
He made a face as if he was thinking about it, and then he smiled and said, "Okay! Let's shake on that," he said as he held out his hand.
You shook it. You thought this would be a pretty safe game. Even if he did win, you figured he would just ask for a McDonald's dinner on me or something like that. If you won…? You don't know what you would wish for…. Maybe you'd just wish for him to tell me how he feels about you…
"Ah! You won?" you groaned as you wiped the sweat off of your face. Alfred was really merciless this game. That made you pout a bit because you now knew for sure that he had previously been going easy on you.
He smiled as he walked towards you. Your heart sank a bit. With a goofy smirk like that, what was he going to wish for you to do? "I'm here to claim my wish now," he smirked a bit as he looked at you, brushing his blonde hair out of his eyes so he could see you a bit better.
"What do you want, then?" you looked up at him. A part of you dreaded what he was about to say, while the other half was really kind of thrilled. When you up at his face, you were really kind of surprised. He was looking really deep into your eyes, as if he was really thinking of what to do. You began to feel yourself blush. "Hurry up Alfie, it's getting late and I'm a starving!" you told him nervously.
"…..I want you to close your eyes…" he said. Or at least that's what you thought he said he was talking so loud.
"What did you say?" you asked him, confused.
"My wish is that you'd close your eyes," he repeated, this time a little louder.
"….? Okay, I guess," you were a bit disappointed and kinda weirded out about this wish. What in the world was he going to do?
"Okay, continue to close your eyes," I heard him, and I felt that he was closer to me. Then I felt him gently grab my hand. I twitched in surprise from that.
"Woah, now… no peeking, _________,"he held one of my fingers and put something cold… smooth… on my ring finger. He then whispered into my ear, "Open your eyes."
You gasped. He had put a diamond ring on your finger. It was gold and the diamond itself was cut to look like a heart. "Al- Alfie?!" you squeaked as you felt your eyes water.
He took your hand. "I know that we've never gone on a date, but there just is not anyone on this entire planet that could ever be more special to me than you. You were always my best friend and I've always wanted to tell you that- that- that--"he began to mumble and blush a great deal. This was the first time you had ever seen Alfred F. Jones s flustered!
"-I love you," you finished the sentence for him. You both looked at each other with cheeks the same shade of red.
"Now this is just a promise ring…" he told me as he still held onto my hand and absentmindedly played with the ring on my finger. "But I hope this will soon be an engagement ring and that as soon as I am done with college…. We- we- can get- m-"he got all flustered again.
"Alfred F. Jones, I would love to be your fiancÚ," you told him as you lovingly looked into his deep blue eyes. "I've loved you ever since we first met and you declared to forever be my hero some ten years ago."
"You remember that?" he smiled and then he hugged you. "______________, I love you!" he yelled practically to everyone in the entire park which gained some applause and catcalls from those who heard.
We stayed like that for a few moments. You both enjoyed the close togetherness and you tried to take in all you had just so recently learned. You had definitely skipped a few levels… from friend zoned all the way to becoming his fiancÚ. You were so happy that you'd now be able to be together forever with your best friend. But there was one thing missing.
You wiggled around a bit in Alfred's arms until you could look straight into his face. "Alfie," you said quietly.
"…Yes?" he said as he smiled and looked fondly back at you.
"Can I still get my wish… even thought I lost?" you asked him with a shy smile.
"Of course, _________________, your wish is my command," he replied with a goofy voice.
I laughed and then asked, "Well then, I wish for a kiss," you blushed as you asked him shyly.
He smiled and then looked deep into your eyes for a bit. "…. Well only because I said I'd grant your wish," he teased, smirking.
You two then shared your first kiss, right there in the basketball court. Who knew that that game would bring such luck to you?
I'm lucky I'm in love with my best friend
Lucky to have been where I have been
Lucky to be coming home again
Ooohh ooooh oooh oooh ooh ooh
They don't know how long it takes
Waiting for a love like this
Every time we say goodbye
I wish we had one more kiss
I'll wait for you I promise you, I will.
After Alfred finished getting college, he moved back and you were wedded outside in the fresh spring air. Everyone there who came to witness your marriage said that they had never seen a couple so in love and so devoted to each other.
And so you two lived on together… through good times and bad… and always remembered that precious night- the night that you two first shared your feelings. The love that could only come from a friendship that blossomed into the most beautiful flower one could ever possess in their hearts.
The flower called true love.
